Tier 2 – Character Creation

Overview

Tier 2 characters begin as experienced adventurers who have already survived enough danger to become capable heroes. They enter the World of Bethica with established skills, greater confidence, and the ability to take on more serious threats, deeper mysteries, and more dangerous journeys.

System & Platform

Ruleset: D&D 2024

Virtual Tabletop: Fantasy Grounds Unity

Starting Level

All new Tier 2 characters begin at Level 5.

Experience Points: Begin at the minimum XP required for Level 5.

Ability Scores

All ability scores start at 8.

Build Method: 27-Point Buy using standard D&D 2024 rules.

Character Options

Use official D&D 2024 content.

Homebrew options must be approved before use.

All characters must fit within the tone and setting of Bethica.

Species & Background

Choose from standard D&D species, Bethica peoples, or other approved options.

Backgrounds should reflect who your character was before reaching Level 5 and how they gained the experience necessary to become an established adventurer.

When possible, connect your character to the World of Bethica through a kingdom, settlement, faction, organization, profession, family, mentor, military service, previous expedition, or other meaningful part of the setting.

Equipment

Begin with the standard equipment or starting wealth appropriate for character creation under the campaign rules.

Additional equipment or magic items are not automatically granted unless specifically approved by the GM.

Alignment & Roleplay

Characters must be capable of functioning as part of an adventuring party.

Evil, disruptive, or deliberately hostile character concepts should be discussed with the GM before play.

Bethica is a serious, story-driven world where choices can have lasting consequences. Characters should be created with motivations, personalities, and goals that allow them to participate meaningfully in the campaign.

Character History

Because Tier 2 characters begin at Level 5, they are not inexperienced adventurers.

Your character should have a reasonable explanation for how they reached this level of ability before joining the campaign.

This history does not need to be long, but it should establish things such as previous adventures, military service, magical training, religious service, exploration, mercenary work, monster hunting, or another believable path that explains the character’s experience.

Your history should not grant additional mechanical benefits unless approved by the GM.

Joining the Campaign

Tier 2 characters may enter the campaign as travelers, mercenaries, explorers, adventurers, scholars, soldiers, pilgrims, treasure hunters, or other individuals whose paths bring them into contact with the existing party.

The GM may help establish a reasonable introduction based on the party’s current location and circumstances.

Advancement

Tier 2 characters advance normally through play and earned experience.

The current World of Bethica campaign remains within Tier 2, covering Levels 5 through 10.

Once a character earns enough experience to advance beyond Tier 2, that character leaves the active Tier 2 campaign and is temporarily retired for possible future higher-level play.

Character Redesign During Tier 2

Tier 2 characters are considered established characters.

Unlike Tier 1, Tier 2 does not normally function as an open redesign period.

After the character enters active play, their class, subclass, ability scores, background selections, feats, and other major build decisions are considered established.

Minor corrections may still be approved by the GM if a mistake was made during character creation or if a rule was misunderstood.

Any significant redesign requires GM approval and must be completed outside of active session time.
